Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter, is one of Guatemala’s most famous traditions. Every year, La Antigua Guatemala pays a grandiose homage to the passion, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ with elaborate processions and meticulously-designed carpets made of flowers and colored sawdust. For a whole week, the colonial city in itself becomes a living piece of ephemeral art, and it hosts an overwhelming amount of visitors who yearn to be a part of it all. And while most people admire the solemn celebrations held throughout the week, they often neglect to notice the ones who put the whole thing together: the brotherhoods.
