In the middle of the night, a very quiet procession crawls its way through the narrow streets of San Andrés Salcabajá, Quiché. Its participants, adorned with palm leaves, carry two large crosses with them. Each cross is carried by the two local confraternities. The procession features no music and no sound, providing an otherworldly feel to the small town in the mountain region of Quiché, which is fittingly cut off from the rest of the country because the roads that lead to it are in very poor conditions. This particular night-time procession serves as the prelude to the Good Friday celebrations in town.
